Matthew Day Jackson
(American, born 1974)
Biography
Matthew Day Jackson is a contemporary American artist whose varied practice incorporates painting, video, and sculpture to investigate esoteric questions of humanity and technology. “Visually, I think that I make work that can be really challenging in the way that images or colors are used in a discursive or discordant manner like they don’t fit,” he has said. Born in 1974 in Panorama City, CA, he received a BFA from the University of Washington in Seattle, and an MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University in 2001. Much of Jackson’s early work was inspired by the designs and writings of Buckminster Fuller, whose interest in utopia and technology fueled the artist’s motifs. Jackson currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others.
