Description
With her signature bright colours and clean, simple style, Nova Scotia’s Maud Lewis is considered an iconic folk artist and a Canadian treasure. She spent her days depicting rural life on the East Coast often creating charming portraits like this of a local cove dotted with houses, docks, fishing and sailboats moored beside them, gulls reeling in the air. Known for her colourful palette—this seaside scene is rendered in bright blues, a pop of red, yellow, white, green and gray. Lewis’s failing health, crippling arthritis and an adult life spent in poverty was never apparent in any of her cheery works. An original folk art painting by Maud Lewis of Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Seascape painted on beaverboard. A harbour scene with fish shacks. Signed "LEWIS" lower right corner. Maud Lewis signed her earlier paintings with just her surname. Later, in the 1960's, she signed her work with her full name including a "period" between the two names. As found, excellent condition in the original frame (very minor fleck to rock, left corner). Painted in the mid to late 1950s. “As long as I’ve got a bit of brush in front of me, I’m all right.” Maud Lewis. Maud Lewis was self-taught and only attended school until Grade Five due to her health issues. The house she later shared with her husband was restored and is on permanent exhibit at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Her artwork is held there and in the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Maud Lewis is the subject of several biographies and two National Film Board of Canada documentaries. In 2017, a biopic of Maud's life titled "Maudie" was released starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke.
