Description
Ancient thinkers invested the square and circle shapes with symbolic powers. Circular shapes were linked to the “cosmic and divine” and square shapes represented “the earth”. Da Vinci’s famous drawing L’Uomo vitruviano (Vitruvian Man) shows how humans fit in to both ideals and proposed the ideal proportions of the human male body.
Sokolsky, known for his curiosity and his experimental photography, pays homage to Da Vinci but also reveals that his proposal was unrealistic, especially when applied to the female body – even that of 1960’s supermodel Jean Shrimpton.
