Description
Mazur is internationally known for his paintings and printmaking— particularly for his dedication to reviving the monotype form in the 20th century. Throughout his career, Mazur worked in the realms of figuration and abstraction, eventually merging the two. Mazur's Pond Edge series demonstrates his mastery of the printing process and commitment to transcendent color. In "Pond Edge VI", Mazur employs a number of printing techniques to achieve both fluid and painterly gestures along with more precise mark making. At the top of the image, the yellow reflection of a sun descends from an unseen horizon. All around it, the wood block grain becomes watery undulations. Inspired by Monet's water gardens as well as early Chinese landscape painting, Mazur transports us into a luscious aquatic scene drenched in light and buzzing with motion. Made a year before his death, Pond Edge VI is among Mazur's most significant achievements in printmaking.
