Michel Comte

Michel Comte is a contemporary fashion photographer, photojournalist, and filmmaker. Best known for his high-profile advertising work and celebrity portraits, Comte has shot the likes of Miles Davis, Sharon Style, and Naomi Campbell for Vanity Fair and Vogue. Born in Zürich, Switzerland on February 19, 1954, he gained international fame when Karl Lagerfeld hired him for the fashion house Chloe. Originally trained as a professional art restorer, Comte is a self-taught photographer and a major influence on contemporary fashion photography. In addition to his commercial work, he has worked on documentary assignments in war zones in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Sudan, and Cambodia for the international Red Cross and his own nonprofit, the Michel Comte Water Foundation. The photographer turned filmmaker with his first 3D feature film, The Girl from Nagasaki (2013)—a retelling of the classic opera Madame Butterfly which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014. Comte describes himself as a restless artist, and has said, “If I no longer have a sense of risk, I immediately move on.” He continues to be an in-demand photographer for advertising clients such as Dolce & Gabbana, Nike, Jaguar, and many others.
