In the late 1960’s, abstract artist Milly Ristvedt had fallen in love with using raw canvas and her abstract form and colourful palette were inspired by the famed Washington Colour School. Uptown is one of a series of stunning compositions she created in 1969—the ‘ribbon’ paintings—broad ‘ribbons’ of colour fanning out across the canvas in vivid red, green, black, blue and orange. Ristvedt painted these when she was just 27 and shared a studio with the abstract artist Jack Bush. Renowned art historian Barry Lord observed at the time that Ristvedt's paintings were "more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari."

In a successful career that spans more than five decades, Milly Ristvedt has held more than 50 solo exhibitions. A graduate of the Vancouver School of Art (she was born in B.C.), she also obtained an MA in Art History at Queen's University in 2011. Ristvedt has won countless awards including the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Her abstract, acrylic canvases are held in private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal and Harvard University. Milly Ristvedt is represented exclusively by Oeno Gallery.
