Milton H. Greene

(American, 1922–1985)

Milton H. Greene was an American photographer best known for his numerous portraits of his close friend Marilyn Monroe. Along with Monroe, Greene also captured images of Paul Newman, Marlene Dietrich, and Sammy Davis Jr. Born Milton H. Greengold on March 14, 1922 in New York, NY, he began taking photographs as a teenager before apprenticing with Eliot Elisofen and later Louise Dahl-Wolfe. During the 1950s and 1960s, Greene worked for several publications, including Life, Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country, and Vogue. He first began working with Marilyn Monroe on an assignment for Look magazine, and later tried to help the depressed actress by inviting her to live with him and his family in their farmhouse in Connecticut. During the time she spent at their home, Greene produced thousands of photographs of Monroe over the course of 52 sessions. The photographer died on August 8, 1985 in Los Angeles, CA.
