Description
Cuttlefish bones are an important material in Lim’s practice, and have been integrated into her work in various forms throughout her career. In Nim Nim (2011), Lim creates a ghostly drawing on velvet using cuttlefish bone powder. In her sculptural works such as Summer Wind (2022), cuttlefish bones are preserved in resin and float like feathers atop delicate wooden canes. In this work, Langue (2022), cuttlefish bones are carefully laid out in an orderly grid. Cuttlefish are an easily accessible ingredient in contemporary Korea, often sold as feed for parrots and turtles. They are also, however, an ancient creature that date back to the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Age, over 100 million years ago, and carry many possible meanings - the joining of earth and ocean, domesticated parrots sharpening their beaks (for which they use the bones) and healing (they are believed to have medicinal properties).
