Nancy Fouts

(American/British, 1945–2019)

Nancy Fouts is a contemporary American-born British artist, noted for her humorous and ironic sculptures and photographs. Fouts' work is characterized by her combining of two disparate yet somewhat related ideas—a skull and false teeth, or a gun and thorns—thereby transforming everyday items into simple, poetic, and expressive observances. "It's not deep, but it is entertaining and it makes people smile!" the artist has quipped of her own work. She has been exhibited at Anderson & Gold Gallery in London, and her work is featured in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. Born in the United States in 1945, Fouts graduated from the Chelsea School of Art and the Royal Academy of Art in the 1960s. She has spent the majority of her life living in London, England, where she has worked in commercial advertising while continuing to produce and hone her artistic practice.
