Natalia Goncharova
(Russian, 1881–1962)
Biography
Natalia Goncharova was a Russian artist known for her Futurist paintings. Dealing with religious, political, and societal themes, the artist made an eclectic body of work incorporating Cubism, Asian art, and Russian folk art. “They [the contemporary French artists] opened my eyes to the great importance and value of my country's art, and by extension, of Oriental art as well,” the artist said. Born on June 21, 1881 in Nagaevo, Russian Empire, Goncharova began her artistic career studying sculpture at the Moscow Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1906, Goncharova began exhibiting at the notorious Salon d'Automne in Paris. She went on to become a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter group, along with Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Paul Klee, and Gabriele Münter. Throughout the course of her career she designed sets and costumes for the ballets of Sergei Diaghilev. Goncharova died on October 17, 1962 in Paris, France. Today, her works are included among the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
