Nguyen Tu Nghiem
(Vietnamese, 1922–2016)
Biography
Nguyen Tu Nghiem was the last of the founding fathers of contemporary Vietnamese fine art. He has been described by the art critic Nguyen Quan as "a historic consciousness in terms of painting." Nghiem’s works meld European post-impressionist techniques with Vietnamese subject matter, creating a universal vision of his homeland. Born in 1922 in Nam Trung, Vietnam, he studied at the Indochina College of Fine Arts during the 1940s. During the 1950s struggle against French colonialism, Nghiem taught painting at the Viet Bac revolutionary base. In the following decades, he became one of the most acclaimed Vietnamese artists of his generation. The artist died at the age of 93 in 2016 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
