Timeline

LOST EMPIRES exhibition prelude 2014/09, written by Hans Hedberg. Each ruin is a dream that spans between the architect and the latter-day observer. On one hand, often grandiose gestures, hopes, expression, utopia. On the other hand, fascination, contemplation, perhaps compassion over the failure to stop time and decay, entropy. In an illusion of safety, in the relief of a historical distance and the fact that this was not her or his ruin, bankruptcy, defeat or annihilation, the latter-day observers often allows themselves to establish an account. Even Nuno Perestrelo’s photographs in the series Lost Empires are a kind of reckoning, and falls into a long tradition, aesthetically and historically, of reflection on ruins. Nuno Perestrelo (b. 1988) is a freelance photographer. Currently based in Madrid.
