Description
Otto Scholderer was born in 1834 in Frankfurt am Main. From 1849 to 1852 he attended the art school attached to the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, studying under Johann David Passavant and others. He came to know Gustave Courbet and his later brother-in-law Victor Müller. During a study trip to Paris from 1857 to 1858 Scholderer befriended Henri Fantin-Latour and moved in Courbet’s circle, becoming increasingly interested in French painting. The artist lived and worked mainly in Kronberg, in the Taunus, from 1858, and then in Düsseldorf from 1866 and Paris from 1868 to 1870. After a brief stay with Victor Müller in Munich, Scholderer moved to London in 1871.where he established a painting school for girls in 1884. In 1899 he moved to Frankfurt am Main, where he died in 1902.
