Paul Henry

(Irish, 1876–1958)

Paul Henry was an Irish artist, best remembered for his inventive landscape paintings: lush vistas of the West of Ireland, replete with towering cumulonimbus clouds and calm lakes and channels surrounded by rural villages, landscapes, and geography endemic to the Irish island. Enjoying considerable popularity in his life, he was often touted as Ireland's best-known artist for a portion of the early 20th century. Henry began his career by studying art in Belfast before studying at the Académie Julian and American painter James Abbott McNeil Whistler's studio in Paris in 1898. While living in the French capitol, he was markedly influenced by artists such as Jean François Millet, Paul Cézanne, and Paul Gauguin. Born on April 11, 1877 in Belfast, Ireland, Henry died on August 24, 1958 in Bray, Ireland and is buried in St. Patrick's cemetery in Wicklow.
