Description
Signed and dedicated ink and pencil on transfer acetate which was exposed onto the lithographic stone for the lithograph printed at the Curwen Studio for Rego's Jane Eyre suite. Dedicated to the Curwen Studio.
In late 2001 and early 2002, Rego worked with Stanley Jones at the Curwen Studio. She produced a series of 25 lithographs based on Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.
'This is a very un-Victorian image of a most Victorian character, the madwoman in the attic. It is a beautifully drawn study of a highly sexed, highly crazed woman who is, as Rego puts it, 'Cross. Very cross at being shut up in the attic.' Bertha is the lithograph drawn on film which comes closest to satisfying the artist as far as quality is concerned.' T.G. Rosenthal, Paula Rego The Complete Graphic Work, 2003
