Description
This is an Important 1983 EARLY Woodfired, Peter Voulkos STACK. in fact it's one of the very first examples of wood fired stacks. He is known for MONUMENTAL ICONIC forms bc they appeared in the many museums all over the world. Voulkos is known for taking ceramics from craft to fine art by deconstructing the archetypal pottery forms such as VASE, CUP and here PLATE. He not only exaggerated the scale making them HUGE he also deconstructed them by slashing and bashing them showing his frustrations with how the art world wasn't accepting at the time of ceramics as a fine art medium. Today we see this as a regular art practice but then we have to remember it was 50+ yrs ago and many old fashioned art forums only allowed paintings or bronze for which voulkos was also a grand master artist. therefore he was the perfect person to bring ceramics into the modern era along side peers such as Lucio Fontana and Pablo Picasso. This Plate is one of the BEST examples we have seen from the original 1973 series and was also exhibited at the JB Blunk exhibition space in the Mingei to Modern show curated by Jeffrey Spahn and Mariah Nielson along side other artists such as Rudy Autio, Jun Kaneko, Isamu Noguchi, Viola Frey, John Mason, Shoji Hamada.
