Pierre Doutreleau

(French, born 1938)

Pierre Doutreleau is a French painter. The primary focus of his work is landscape paintings, which investigate the dispersion of light and movement through the application of thick, textural blocks of pigment akin to the work of Nicolas de Staël. This body of work, which Doutreleau began during a stay in the United States in 1968 and continued throughout his career, is mostly populated by gradients of subtle color contrasted by a central, often out-of-focus, representational image. The artist offered a psychological exploration of how light is manipulated by speed, reflection, or atmospheric depth. Born on June 14, 1938 in the city of Arles, France, he continues to live and work in the country of his birth.
