Description
Pierre Eugène Montézin
1874-1946 | French
Voiliers sur la Seine
(Sailboats on the Seine)
Signed Montezin (lower right)
Oil on board
Composed by French painter Pierre Eugène Montézin, this signed oil on canvas offers an impressionistic perspective of sailboats on the Seine in France. In the colorful reflections of the foliage in the sun-dappled water, the figures captured in breathy brushstrokes and the multi-hued vibrancy of the landscape, Montézin’s Impressionist roots are clearly on display. Overall, this composition exemplifies the artist’s devotion to color, light, and form.
Strongly influenced by Claude Monet, Montézin embraced the principles and aesthetics of Impressionism wholeheartedly. The artist exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1903 — his first of many Salon exhibitions. In 1907, he would be awarded a third-class medal and improved to achieve a second-class medal in 1910. After his return from World War I, Montézin dedicated himself to painting landscapes in Dreux and Moret in France.
Voiliers sur la Seine will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné being prepared by Monsieur Cyril Klein Montézin.
Circa 1940-45
