Catalogue note
This panel is a petite version of Perugino's Madonna del Sacco (Florence, Palazzo Pitti, inv. no. 219), so named for the cloth carrying sack on which the Christ Child sits. Popular since its execution circa 1495-1500, the painting was widely copied around the turn of the sixteenth century. The earliest adaptation is likely a tondo in the Liechtenstein Princely Collections, Veinna (inv. no. 276), attributed to Perugino's workshop. Other versions are in the Ca d'Oro in Venice, the Duomo in Trento, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, among other repositories.

The panel is uncradled and on a single plank of wood, which has been reinforced on the verso with two horizontal and one vertical insets. The work is slightly bowed. The image reads very well beneath a freshly applied clear varnish. The paint surface is stable and in excellent condition. There is an approximately three-inch line of repair (likely to address paint loss caused by the bow of the surface) in the blue robes of the Madonna; this is visible to the naked eye, but not does distract from the overall composition. Inspection under UV light reveals a thin milky varnish beneath which scattered passages of retouching fluoresce. The painting should hang in its current state. Offered unframed.
