The base of the sculpture depicts elements of his work, an artist's palate with brushes, a large note book, an art folio for his drawings and a bronze architectural column. Superb quality bronze cast with a light brown patination and darker contrasting highlights. The bronze is fitted to a dark green/ black marble base. Leonardo da Vinci is titled in the bronze at his feet also signed by the artist. Richard Kauffungen was an accomplished sculptor in marble. His work with Franz Xaver Messerschmidt and Caspar Zumbusch may be viewed at the University Palace of Vienna. Kauffungen wrote books on sculpture and was a highly sought after portrait sculptor from 1890 to the late1920's in Vienna . He worked mainly on commissions and it is rare to find a historical sculpture in his oeuvre.
