Robert Grosvenor

(American, born 1937)

Robert Grosvenor is American sculptor known for his works which are rooted in Minimalism but deviate from its logic. Like Robert Smithson, Grosvenor’s elegant sculptures call to mind archaeological sites and vernacular architecture. “I like things I’ve seen very fast and I don’t remember what they are; but I remember the outline, the image. I’d like my sculptures to be remembered the same way,” he has said. Born in 1937 in New York, NY, he went on to study in France at both the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon and the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, before returning to the United States. During the mid-1960s, Grosvenor along with Mark di Suvero started the Park Place Gallery in Lower Manhattan. It was around this time he began producing the works for which he is now known. The artist currently lives and works in East Patchogue, NY. Today, Grovsvenor’s work are held in the collections of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, among others.
