Description
This rare, vintage silkscreen poster is, exceptionally, hand signed, dated and inscribed by the artist on the occasion of Indiana's exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark from February 19 - March 12, 1972. The inscription reads as follows:
For Mayor R. G. Lugar
This is an historic inscription. Many people know Richard Lugar as he served for nearly three decades as a distinguished Senator from Indiana (1977- 2013), the home state of the artist Robert Indiana. However, in 1972, when Robert Indiana inscribed this work to Lugar, he was about to commence his second term as Mayor of Indianapolis -- Robert Indiana's hometown. In fact, Lugar served on the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners from 1964 to 1967 before he was elected to two terms as mayor of Indianapolis - serving from 1968 to 1976. In 1972 - the year of this work, Lugar gave the keynote address at the 1972 Republican National Convention
Authenticity unconditionally guaranteed.
Hand signed, dated and boldly inscribed in silver marker on the lower recto (front).
