Description
As a prolific and consummate Pop artist, Robert Rauschenberg appropriated images from every facet of life, especially imagery in popular American consciousness. Produced in the early 1990s, Hollywood Sphinx draws on two icons that are representative of American culture: Betty Boop and Budweiser. Rauschenberg's characteristic swaths of color punctuate the photographic imagery of this print. This work is from the series Illegal Tender L.A. and was produced by the printer-publisher Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles.
