Biography
Ryan McGinley is a contemporary American photographer. Known for his casual snapshot style, McGinley’s work typically features young nude models showing a carefree attitude that the artist calls an “evidence of fun.” His work has drawn comparison to his contemporaries Dash Snow and Dan Colen, both for his irreverent approach and hedonistic portrayal of youth. McGinley first started by using his friend group as models but now often photographs celebrities like Brad Pitt. Born on October 17, 1977 in Ramsey, NJ, McGinley enrolled at the Parsons School of Design in 1998 and lived in the East Village. Around this time he began taking Polaroids of every person who entered his apartment and in 2003, at the age of 25, he became the youngest artist in 30 years to have a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. In 2012, Ryan McGinley: Whistle for the Wind, the first large monograph on the artist was released by Rizzoli publishing house. His work is featured in public collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others. McGinley has also worked with various musicians such as Sigur Rós and Katy Perry. The artist continues to live and work in New York, NY.
