Description
This image by Sarah Lucas is from her earliest and most iconic series of self-portraits which she first presented in the early 90’s at the beginning of her career and around the time of the YBA explosion. This series confronts gender stereotypes, sexuality and defiance. She poses simultaneously as tough and careless, masculine but feminine. Lucas has said, “I suddenly could see the strength of the masculinity about it - the usefulness of it to the subject struck me at that point, and since then I've used that.”
Taken in 1990, this particular image was never editioned until now and exclusively for the New Museum.
