Description
This is a painting by Serbian-American artist Savo Radulovic. It is a landscape rendered in an abstract style. Most of the scene is dominated by mountains in bold black and white lines on a blue background. White swirls are also used to represent clouds, but also instill action in the scene. In the midground is a small town (with an improbably tall tower) while the foreground is a patchwork of bright fauvist colors potentially representing fields. It's a bold image with lots of energy and action. The medium is oil on masonite. The painting is done on the smooth side of the masonite. It's in excellent condition with no paint loss or damage. The location is not given, but with the mountains, I lean towards this being a Yugoslavian landscape. An excellent and representative work by this artist.
Savo Radulović (1911 – 1991)
Savo Radulović was a Serbian-American artist. He joined his father who owned a photography studio in Ziegler, Illinois sometime in the 1920s. While he assisted his father in the studio, learning photography, his artistic talents were recognized from an early age. He formally studied art at Washington University in St. Louis. One of his first teachers was fellow Serbian, Tanasko Milovich. Radulović had early success winning a Carnegie Fellowship to Fogg Museum, Harvard University and enjoyed his first solo exhibition in New York City in 1940. He was also recognized in his hometown in the same year receiving the Purchase Prize from the St. Louis Art Museum. During WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Army winning distinction as a War Department artist, but also serving in the intelligence corps supporting the Allied forces’ Mediterranean campaign (which included Yugoslavia). After the war he started his own gallery in St. Louis that he ran for over 30 years. In the 1960s he also had a gallery in Dubrovnik Yugoslavia. He is buried in Dubrovnik. He continued to win accolades for his work. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. His work was selected for exhibition at major institutions in the US and internationally, most notably the Whitney Museum of American Art; the National Academy of Design; the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and the Saint Louis Art Museum. His work is held in these museums and many others.
