Large scale horizontal abstract oil on canvas, with unusual color juxtapositions of blue, purple, yellow and cream colors. The white space allows the color forms to float, and create the illusion of movement. The subtle palette of this work is enhanced by the energetic movement of the artist's mark making. Framed dimensions are 63 x 78 inches.
This work is accompanied by the recent book publication, SCOTT PATTINSON. One of the essays was written by RM Vaughan, art critic and writer, based in Berlin. Back in 2005, writing in the National Post, RM Vaughan described Pattinson as an “exuberant and sizzling emerging painter”. In 2010, he was one of two Canadian painters chosen to represent Canada at an international exhibition in Italy. In 2011, art critics in Vancouver and Edmonton called him edgy, innovative, a young painter to collect. Then in 2014, Gallery Stratford hosted a substantial retrospective exhibition his paintings spanning a 10 year period. Now in his early 40s, Pattinson is “emerging” no more. He is a present artistic force to be reckoned with and has developed a deft and confident maturity in his work.
Of Pattinson's new work, he writes: "Pattinson plays with the emotional triggers of colors, mostly by slamming together unlikely, even decadent, contrasting hues and then encases those associations, the metonymic readings possible, with harsh, cutting and calligraphic blackish storkes. A Pattinson painting is a bird next built in the rafters of a disco, an ornamental garden behind bars, a severe steel tower struck by a hurricane, with all the pretty interior decor blown out and splayed across the strike zone."
Pattinson studied architecture and urban design at Oxford University and the University of Toronto. Both disciplines inform his dynamic, structural abstract painting. His sensibility in space and mastery of colour influences our thinking and challenges aesthetic. Since 2005, Pattinson has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries across Canada, including a 2014 retrospective at Gallery Stratford. He is exclusively represented by the Oeno Gallery.
