Shiro Kuramata

(Japanese, 1934–1991)

Shiro Kuramata was a Japanese designer known for his Minimalist furniture made from industrial materials. In Shiro’s work, function was always considered, but the aesthetic qualities of each material was always given precedent. His best known piece, the Miss Blanche Chair (1988), is made of four magenta-hued aluminum legs supporting a transparent-resin seat embedded with red-paper roses. Born on November 29, 1934 in Tokyo, Japan, Shiro studied at the Kuwasawa Design School in Tokyo. He began his own design practice in 1965, where he worked until his death. His work can be found in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto. The artist died on February 1, 1991 in Tokyo, Japan.
