Condition Report
The canvas is lined and the paint surface is stable. The reverse of the canvas bears to old patch repairs. The paint surface is covered in a thin layer of clear varnish. The paint surface, which is very loose and brushy throughout, is generally well preserved. There is a minor scratch in the bottom left corner, and discoloured retouchings on an old repair in the top right corner. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching and strengthening in the sitter's cheek, eyebrows and neck line, with further minor retouchings visible in the background and along a vertical repaired scratch on the sitter's jacket. Overall the painting is in a fairly good condition and presents well.
