Terry Frost was born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in 1915. He was part of the
pioneering generation of abstract painters who rose to prominence in the 1950s. In 1946
he moved to St. Ives in Cornwall and though he periodically took teaching positions in
other parts of England, he remained devoted to the Cornish landscape to which he
returned permanently in 1957. His distinctive vocabulary of shapes (recalling boat prows,
moorings and patches of the elusive English sun) and his skillful juxtaposition of color
and form earned him wide recognition in Britain for more than four decades.
