Stan Douglas

(Canadian, born 1960)

Stan Douglas is a Canadian Conceptual artist best known for his video, photography, and film installations. Exploring the obsolescence of technology and art, his narrative themes often revolve around specific historic periods and the failure of utopian movements. “Utopias may not last long. But what remains is a model of how a positive future could have taken place.” The artist’s work is deeply embedded with the language of Modernism, and frequently references the work of the writers Franz Kafka, Joseph Conrad, and Samuel Beckett. Born on October 11, 1960 in Vancouver, Canada, Douglas studied at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, before breaking out onto the international art scene. He has gone on to exhibit works at David Zwirner in New York, the 1995 Whitney Biennial, and at documenta 10 in Kassel. Douglas lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. The artist’s works are in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
