Stanley Casselman
(American, born 1963)
Biography
Stanley Casselman is a contemporary abstract painter. Created with thickly applied acrylic paint on polyester fabric, his works have been compared to the abstractions of Gerhard Richter. Casselman like Richter, manipulates paint with a custom-built plexiglass squeegee. “Each painting is its own visual story that transcends explanation through language,” the artist has said. Born in 1963 in Phoenix, AZ, he began to gather critical attention after responding to art critic Jerry Saltz’s request for a perfect copy of a Gerhard Richter painting. Impressed by his technique, Saltz purchased Casselman’s reproduction, and later wrote an article about him in New York Magazine. The artist lives and works in New York, NY.
