Terence Donovan
(British, 1936–1996)
Biography
Terence Donovan was a British photographer and filmmaker known for his black-and-white portraits of celebrities and fashion models. “The magic of photography is metaphysical. What you see in the photograph isn't what you saw at the time,” he once explained. “The real skill of photography is organized visual lying.” Born on September 14, 1936 in London, United Kingdom, he went on to study at the London School of Photoengraving and Lithography. His career blossomed in the late 1950s, when he started working as an assistant for the successful fashion photographer, John French. At the age of 22, Donovan opened his own studio, and was soon producing photos for advertising agencies and publications, including Elle, The Sunday Times Magazine, and Vogue. Among his most noted works are formal photographs of Princess Diana, and music videos he directed for Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love and Simply Irresistible. Having struggled with depression throughout his life, Donovan committed suicide at the age of 60, on November 22, 1996 in London, United Kingdom.
