Canadian artist Thrush Keats Byron Holmes has been making a big splash on the North American art scene for many years. He’s famous for his bold, bright florals accented with neon and his unapologetic, irreverent approach to art that references contemporary culture. Holmes creates unique pieces that blur the lines between traditional and abstract genres.

Untitled C is one in a series he painted in 2004 at age 25. This mixed media panel is predominantly an earthy rust-colour, accented by black scribbles punched up with sky blue accents. In the early 2000s, he painted many works under the alias of Truman Couture.

“I’ve always felt that I was born in the wrong time period, that my contemporaries are dead poets. I run with different crowds – musicians, construction workers, designers – this contributes to a fuller perspective on things.” Thrush Holmes

He was born in 1979, spent two weeks at art school and reportedly left when the school refused to fast track him. Holmes opened his first gallery at age 18. His first solo exhibition was in Los Angeles at age 25. He lives and works in Toronto and has found a wide audience in North America. Thrush Holmes’s work resides in the permanent collections of the Elton John Aids Foundation, Sony Dreamworks and Def Jam Records, among others.
