Description
‘Gold Amber Wings’ is an abstracted glass sculpture created by American artist Tom Marosz in 2017. Featuring a brilliant gold amber color, the sculpture strikes by the simplicity of its intertwining lines, along with its inspired depiction of wings. The subtle use of curves is beautifully highlighted by the purity of the amber color. Tom cuts, grinds and polishes the glass, resulting in the piece’s architectural form. The elegance of the wings is transformed into a more primal effect, when the sculpture is inverted, and the piece becomes an animal with the hair on its back standing up. The gracefulness of it undulating silhouette and the fascinating hue of its amber color, will make this abstracted sculpture an exquisite decorative accent in any room, whether placed atop a pedestal, commode or console table.
Tom Marosz’ drive to test the limits of manipulating light began early on; teenage interests in photography and optics yielded early holography projects. His efforts were deemed so cutting edge during the 1960’s that he ended up collaborating with the Navy Electronics Lab team in Point Loma. After 15 years in the construction business as a glazing contractor, doing what others said could not be done, Tom turned to art. Using his cold working, cutting and polishing skills, Tom creates a wide spectrum of glass sculptures from the delicate to the substantial. Many of his current works are created using optic crystal and dichroic coatings – which filter some colors and reflect others – and kiln fusing. Some of his pieces are a direct reference to an exact moment in his life, while others are reflections of his attempt for absolute perfection in the process of his craft.
In addition to small pieces suitable for a home or office, Tom has created a number of large scale installations including “Vantage Point Wings”, a lit glass winged water feature standing over 18′ tall stationed at the entrance to downtown San Diego and “The Undulating Ball Creation” at the University of British Columbia Law School which over 400 suspended glass spheres stretching 45’ long and 20’ tall. Aside from Tom’s public collections, his unique sculptures are presently enjoyed in many private collections worldwide.
