Tony Oursler
(American, born 1957)
Biography
Tony Oursler is a contemporary American multimedia and installation artist. Known for his mass-media-inspired and consumer-driven work, Oursler explores the psychological and social relationships between individuals and visual technologies. Applying humor and irony to his wide range of work, the artist hones in on the effects of media on human consciousness. “My early idea of what could be art for my generation was an exploded TV,” Oursler has said. Born in 1957 in New York, NY, Oursler received his formal training at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, where he became close friends with the late-artist Mike Kelley. Today, his work is included in many institutions, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the National Museum of Osaka, and the Tate Gallery in London. In 2016, the artist’s exhibition “Imponderable” opened to great acclaim at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The show focuses on the history of mysticism in popular culture, including the subjects of stage magic, spirit photography, and the supernatural. Oursler currently lives in New York, NY.
