Description
This is a translation of Genesis Chapter 1 into the shorthand symbols created by the Pitman company for secretaries to take speedy diction. The original Genesis was, for centuries, handwritten by monks. Just as the handwriting was taken over by the technology of printing, this in turn is disappearing with the advent of computer technology. This is a reference to the Wesleyan Methodist Missionaries venturing to Northern Manitoba. Discovering there was no Inuit written language, they introduced 'Pitman's Shorthand' as inspiration for their first written form. There are fragments remaining in their culture after the syllabic writing was refined, such as their 'STOP' road signs.
