Tony Scherman

(Canadian, born 1950)

Tony Scherman is a Canadian figurative painter. He is best known for his encaustic portraits of historical and fictional figures including Rosa Parks, Ophelia, and Malala Yousafzai. Using encaustic, a technique in which is pigment bound in wax rather than oil, enhances the haunting yet life-like effect of his portraits. “All I can tell you is that I see beauty everywhere,” Scherman has said. Born in 1950 in Toronto, Canada, hestudied at the Royal College of Art in London before returning to his home country. A member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the artist lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
