Description
Tony Scherman (b. 1950) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. Scherman's moody palette and sumptuous portraits (whether contemporary, historical or allegorical) reference art history's masters, ranging from Goya to Manet, yet his works are visceral and contemporary.
Grace Kelly is one of the most legendary female stars of the 20th century. Beautiful, blonde and poised, she was the epitome of 50's/60's glamour. Kelly quickly became a major Hollywood screen and style star after landing her first film role in 1951. Within four years she starred in numerous films with cinema's elite, including starring in three Hitchcock films. She further captivated the world with her real-life fairytale by becoming royalty. Not even the venerable Hitchcock could convince one of his favorite "icy blonde" muses to return to acting after she married Prince Rainer III in 1956, becoming Princess of Monaco.
In this tender, Delft-colored portrait, Grace Kelly appears regal with her signature coiffed blonde hair and an elegant pearl necklace. Almost a third of Kelly's face appears shadowed, slightly distorting her features and hinting at mysteries concealed behind her veneer of perfection. Scherman also painted Kelly in 2000 in an even darker hued, moody portrait titled The Other Grace Kelly.
Tony Scherman's unique prints do not come to market frequently. This work is a rare affordable entry point for a young collector interested in Tony Scherman.
Today the artist's work can be found in nearly every public collection in Canada, as well as many international museums including LACMA (Los Angeles) and Centre Pompidou (Paris).
