Description
Regionality is a play on the term regionalism, used somewhat diminutively in art history to describe painters whose work is more concerned with local subjects and styles than broader international artistic concerns. The painting is intended as meditations on what might constitute the local.
Lansdowne began Regionality I when he found himself working in two rural locations at either end of Canada during the summer of 2022: at a residency in rural Prince Edward Island on the east coast, and at his mother's home on BC's west coast. It combines the facade of a shuttered Anglican church in PEI with a bouquet of wildflowers and weeds picked by the roadside outside his mother's house. It is punctuated by a carrot, which is both inherently local - grown in the earth and sold at market - and so ubiquitous it could be from anywhere.
