Urs Fischer
(Swiss, born 1973)
Biography
Urs Fischer is a Swiss Conceptual artist best known for his large-scale sculptures and installations. Exploring impermanent materials and popular culture, Fischer’s work evokes genres historically associated with painting, including landscapes, nudes, and still lifes. One of Fischer’s primary interests is the spontaneous process of creating and destroying materials. His installation What if the phone rings (2003) involved lighting life-size candles shaped as nude women, to create ever-changing shapes as they burned down to a puddle of wax. “Duchamp’s the guy, the legend, who liberated objects from being second-class citizens,” he said of the influence Marcel Duchamp has had on contemporary art. “Even if his greatness lies in our imagination and how he built himself to make us imagine his work as we imagine it. His objects are often not very satisfying to spend time with outside of the fictions he created for them.” Born on May 2, 1973 in Zurich, Switzerland, Fischer studied at the Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich. He has shown at the Venice Biennale three times and been the subject of major exhibitions at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Fischer lives and works in New York, NY. His works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
