Description
Wendell Castle (b. 1932) is a highly celebrated and collected American creator.
Throughout his dynamic career, he has destabilized the boundaries and definitions of studio furniture, craft, and most recently between art and design.
Although Castle is best known for his creations in wood (and to a lesser extent bronze) early on in his career he explored the possibilities of realizing his organic and poetic forms in other materials. The "Cloud" shelf is a paradigm of this curiosity. In the late 1960s Castle created the "Molar" collection, which as its name suggests, is composed of highly sculptural forms that somewhat resemble highly stylized teeth. The pieces were created through molded plastic techniques.
"Cloud" was first produced in 1969 in gel-coated fiberglass. In 2007 Castle produced a new refined edition of the work in gel-coated reinforced plastic.
Castle's work can be found in nearly every major American museum's permanent collection including the Smithsonian Institute (Washington, DC), the Metropolitan Museum Of Art (NYC) the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago to mention a few.
