Description
William Perehudoff (1918-2013) is one of the most cherished and collected Canadian abstract painters. His work is exemplary of how color field painting was expressed in Canada.
Like some of his American contemporaries, he was encouraged and guided by legendary New York critic Clement Greenberg. Perehudoff spent several summers at the University of Saskatchewan's legendary Emma Lake Artist's Workshop where he worked and studied with Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland during the 1960s.
Today Perehudoff is known for his simple but exuberant compositions that juxtapose and celebrate color.
"Red Dawn" is comprised of saturated bands of color that interact and blend with each other while still remaining formally distinct. Varying in opacity, the artwork appears to hover over of surface of the page, resulting in a composition that inspires deep contemplation. This work is a testament to Perehudoff's expertise as a colorist, and his ongoing commitment and exploration of color-field painting. What is particularly impressive about this work of rich crimson, pomegranate, coral and gray is that is was executed on paper.
During his lifetime, Perehudoff had recognition across Canada (and beyond). Today his works can be found in major public collections across the country. Even during his heyday, Perehudoff stayed in Saskatchewan preferring to paint at his family's farm.
