Description
It was painted in Berlin before 17 March 1964, when Scott’s Berlin studio was made ready, and September when it was included as Blue East in the exhibition Stadien und Impulse at the Haus am Waldsee, Berlin. That title makes it a pair to Blue West (the original title of Dark Blue, Light Blue and White), which was also shown. When cat. no. Dark Blue, Light Blue and White was exhibited in London the following year, Scott changed the politically slanted title to one more in keeping with his other works (Dark Blue, Light Blue and White). The present work, however, was not shown again during Scott’s lifetime and, as far as is known, the original title remained unchanged.
The painting, which is unsigned, remained with the artist. It was part of a gift to the collector in whose family it remains.
