Description
CAPITAL VIRTUE 5 : PATIENCE
“ALLEGORY OF THE SWEDISH SPIDER CASTLE”
#Patience@FA
The capital virtue of "Patience" (Latin "Patientia") is the ability to endure suffering or difficult situations without becoming upset or angry. It involves a calm and composed attitude towards challenges, and the willingness to persevere through them with resilience and fortitude.
Overall, the capital virtue of patience is an essential quality for anyone seeking to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. By developing patience, people can better navigate the ups and downs of life, persevere through difficulties, and achieve their goals with grace and equanimity.
Many people dislike spiders and lose their patience and calmness when seeing them...
(Even this beautiful Wasp Spider?)
But their spider webs are real gems of design and engineering by nature. A spider web is a good example of the capital virtue of Patience because it takes a lot of time, effort, and patience for a spider to construct its web.
The spider must carefully weave each strand of silk, taking care not to break it or become entangled in its own creation. Once the web is complete, the spider must wait patiently for its prey - its next meal - to become ensnared.
In the picture we see a Swedish spider, trying to build its web with the help of an instruction manual from a local furniture supplier.
Although the spider intended to take a shortcut, assembling the web from a manual can be a frustrating and time-consuming process that requires patience, even more patience than when following its own instinct.
Haste is waste ? Rome wasn't built in a day !
The attentive viewer may notice a waiting line of flies around the web. The flies are aware of the delayed construction process. The customers of the spider (the flies) are patiently waiting in line to get their trip to heaven (by being eaten).
Patience is the key to paradise ?!
With the words of Pieter Breughel de Oude : “Dit is die duecht die alle duechden baert.“ “Haec est virtus quae virtutes omnes parit.”
This translates to:
This is the virtue that gives birth to all virtues.
