After a Night’s darkness and a Day’s Sail was recorded on Lamu Island off the cost of Kenya where Fried participated in an artist residency in early 2019. Founded in the fourteenth century, Lamu is the most preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. Filmed primarily with a night vision camera, the video depicts the interactions of humans and animals with the natural world around them, and with each other: as human figures dance across the darkness, communing with each other on the beach, horses swim through the waves and a beached whale lies on the shore, slowly breathing in a shallow pool of water. Interspersed within these moments are scenes of trees, examining their roots and permanence against the constant movement of the ocean. After a Night’s darkness and a Day’s Sail is a voyage on threatened seas, a distorted reflection of the violence and fragility within our ocean’s ecosystems.
