Following last December's success of presenting works of art at attractive prices, we are delighted to present a selection of paintings, sculpture and photography at our Aberdeen gallery again during the month of December, providing perfect ideas for holiday gift giving. Artists include Chinyee, a Chinese diaspora artist; Kan Tai-Keung, famous Hong Kong ink artist; Stephen King, award winning landscape photographer; Li Wei-Han, Rosanna, ceramicist; Wang Dalin and Shao Yan, Contemporary Chinese artists as well as women artists, Qiao Yuan and Cheuk Ka-Wai, Cherie. This curated selection of eight artists is full of diversity and most importantly all priced between HK$6,000 - HK$25K.

Cheuk Ka-Wai, Cherie (b. 1989), an important woman artist of the new generation in Hong Kong. She is known for her meticulous paintings depicting flowers, birds and animals, which are often filled with symbols and memories, as well as subjects inspired by her personal experiences and emotions. Cheuk obtained a BA in Fine Arts with first-class honours at Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012, and MA in Fine Arts in 2017, specializes in Chinese Gongbi painting. Cheuk has had three solo exhibitions since 2015, the most recent one was in Taipei in 2020. In this exhibition, we showcase her two exclusive works that tribute to the ink master Lui Shou-Kwan.     

Alisan Fine Arts has been representing Cheuk Ka-Wai since 2015 and has exhibited her works in numerous exhibitions, in particular with a sell-out success at Art Basel Hong Kong in 2022. She was also selected for the Art Basel Hong Kong Tram Project. Other important exhibitions include French May Associated Project Chinese Surrealism, 2021; Being and Inking, Redtory Museum of Contemporary Art, Guangzhou, 2016; Lui Shou-Kwan 40 Years On, Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2015.    

Her works can be found in Hong Kong Museum of Art, China City Bank-Art in CNCBI, Hong Kong, and many important private collections.  

Chinyee (b. 1929 Nanjing), Abstract Expressionist belongs to the first generation of Chinese diaspora. She is best known for her creations combining Eastern spirit and Western expression. In 1947, Chinyee received a scholarship to study at College of Mount Saint Vincent in New York and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. She then obtained a Master of Arts in Art Education from New York University in 1953. In the 1950s, she began experimenting with semi-abstract art, then later, total abstraction. The spontaneity of touch, the sense of excitement in compositions, and the unexpected bursts of colours are all genuine expressions of her emotions and life experiences. Chinyee’s outstanding works have been honoured by UNICEF in its educational films, and selected for US Department of State program “Art in Embassies” several times, exhibiting at US Consulate in Hong Kong from 2014-2016. Important exhibitions include Asian Traditions/Modern Expressions touring in 1997-1999 with catalogue published. In 2023, she will also participate in the group exhibition of female abstract artists held by the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London. In this exhibition, we focus on her series of collage works and watercolours.    

Alisan Fine Arts has been representing Chinyee since 2004, and has organized her 50-year Retrospective at Shanghai Art Museum in 2007; solo exhibition at Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2013; and more recently, at our Central gallery to celebrate her 90th birthday in 2018, with two important catalogues published.    

Her works have been collected by numerous private collectors, UNICEF, Shanghai Art Museum, Nankai University and Tianjin.  

Stephen King is an award-winning landscape photographer based in Hong Kong. He frequently travels the world to capture images that evoke a landscape’s simultaneous capacity for drama and serenity. King’s photography is famous for possessing a painterly quality, a style he cultivates through his sedulous use of light, colour, and composition. In the recent years, King has won more than 20 awards and distinctions at many of the world's most popular photo competitions, including The Independent Photographer, Overall Winner - Landscape Award; Epson International Pano Awards, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze, 2020; Paris Photo Prize Px3 - Honorable Mention (Selected for Exhibition), 2019; two consecutive World’s Top Ten Landscape Photographer - World Rank #3, HK rank #1, 2017 & 2018; International Landscape Photographer of the Year - Winner - Exemplary Tree Award, 2017.   

Alisan Fine Arts has been representing Stephen King since 2015, coordinated his first show in Hong Kong, a joint exhibition Un/Natural: Photographs by Stephen King and Ming Thein in 2015; and organised his first solo exhibition Rhythms in Nature in 2018. We also showcased his works at Art Basel Hong Kong 2016 & 2017, and Taipei Dangdai in 2020. King also exhibits his work regularly at Fine Art Asia/Ink Asia, and his work has been shown in California, New York, London and Paris. 

His large-scale prints have proved popular with private and corporate collectors around the world. His images have been featured in public spaces around Hong Kong including at "Otto e Mezzo", Hong Kong's popular three-star Michelin restaurant, also featured in numerous prestigious art and photography publications, including National Geographic, Asia Art News, Zoom Magazine and Art Investment Magazine. 

Kan Tai-Keung (b. 1942 Pangyu, Guangzhou) is a well-known Hong Kong graphic designer and noted ink painter. His passion for painting developed early on in his childhood, and his grandfather, Kan Yaosheng, a clay sculptor, encouraged his pursuit of art. Kan first studied watercolour painting and sketching with his uncle Kan May-tin in 1964. In 1967, he began attending design classes taught by Wucius Wong and Chinese ink painting lessons by ink master Lui Shou-Kwan. In Kan’s ink paintings, he not only emphasizes the space and rhythm of traditional ink art, but also incorporates graphic design elements. As seen in The Dance in Ink No.17 where he combines waterfalls and trees with bold strokes cropped from the Chinese character “Dance”.    In 2005, Kan was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Design from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and in 2016 awarded the HKDA Lifetime Honorary Award by Hong Kong Designers Association. He is now the Honorary Dean, Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, Shantou University, and was the Guest Professors of Central Institute of Fine Arts, and Tsinghua University. His golden wedding exhibition 50 Years of Love and Art at Chinese Arts and Crafts has just finished in early December in 2022.   

Alisan Fine Arts held two solo exhibitions for Kan in 1985 and 1990. We have also included his works in two important exhibitions for Lui Shou-Kwan and his students at Hong Kong Arts Centre in 1995 and 2015, and recently with a sell-out success at Fine Art Asia in 2022.    

His works are in the collection of Ashmolean Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Art Society of International Monetary Fund, Washington D.C.; National Art Museum of China, Beijing; Guangdong Museum of Art; Taiwan Provincial Art Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art and M+.  

Li Wei-Han, Rosanna (b. Hong Kong) is a ceramicist and design educator, well known for her "signature ceramic plump lady" sculptures. Depicting the sense of contentment and vitality of simple folk, her works are often filled with wit and humour. Li studied ceramics at Hong Kong Polytechnic, and then pursued her undergraduate studies in Art Education at University of Liverpool, UK. She later earned her Diploma in Art Education, University of London Institute of Education; Master’s Degree in Educational Management, Cheltenham & Gloucester College, UK; and Master’s Degree in Cultural Studies, Lingnan University, Hong Kong. In 2016, she was a participant of the Shigaraki Cultural Ceramics Park Artist-in-Residence Programme of Shigaraki, Japan. In 2020, Li received Hong Kong Artist of the Year Award (Visual Arts) at the 14th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards. She also participated in numerous public art projects, including the current display at Hong Kong International Airport; Hong Kong MTR, Art Square Salisbury Garden, to name a few.    

Alisan Fine Arts has exhibited her ceramic works in important exhibition Uniquely Hong Kong in 2020, and Fine Art Asia in 2022. On display in this exhibition is her new work.   

Her work can be found in the collections of major museums such as Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Guangdong Museum of Art, Shiwan Ceramic Museum, Zhejiang Museum of Art, and New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum.  

 Qiao Yuan (b. 1980 Yixing, Jiangsu) is one of the most talented contemporary painters in landscape in Shanghai. She received a BA from the Academy of Fine Arts of Nanjing University in 2004. Prior to the completion of MA in the same academy in 2007, she already obtained Silver Awards at National Exhibition of Outstanding Ink Paintings by Young Art Tutors in Hangzhou in 2004, and Jiangsu Meticulous Paintings Exhibition in Nanjing in 2006 respectively. Over the past decade, she has explored a new perspective of Chinese traditional landscape paintings by using blue and green mineral pigments. With the combination of the techniques of meticulous painting and freehand brushwork, she applies over twenty layers of colours on a thin rice paper that adds richness to the simplicity. Through the two autumn landscape paintings on display, one can discover detailed layers and relaxed atmosphere in her works.    

Important exhibitions include the 5th Shenzhen International Ink Biennale, 2006; 3rd Chengdu Biennial, 2007; We are the World: Colour Paintings by Chinese Artists - Shanghai Expo 2010, Shanghai Art Museum, 2011; The Future Form of Ink: Post 1980s Generation Artists, Jinling Art Museum, Nanjing, 2016.   Alisan Fine Arts has exhibited her woks in Women Ink | China Hong Kong in 2019; Emerging Ink Artists in 2017.   

Her works have been collected by Jiangsu Art Museum, Nanjing; Ningbo Museum of Art, Ningbo.  

 Shao Yan (b.1962 Shandong), contemporary ink artist based in Beijing, is best known for using syringe shots with expressive brushstrokes to create abstract calligraphic paintings. He studied ink painting at Laiyang Normal University in Shandong in 1981, and specialised in calligraphy at Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1990. Shao skillfully merges abstraction and traditional calligraphy, creatively presenting his subconscious images through modern calligraphy. His works have been exhibited in several international calligraphy exhibition, including Brushed Voices: Calligraphy in Contemporary China, Wallach Art Gallery, Columbia University, USA, 1998; Writing/Non-Writing, Hangzhou, 2005; and 1st International Calligraphy Biennial, Seoul, 2008. In 2012, his solo exhibitions were at Today Art Museum, Beijing, and Shanghai Ink Art Museum.    

Alisan Fine Arts has exhibited Shao’s works in several group exhibitions, including the major exhibition I Am in It - Contemporary Chinese Art Expressions prior travelled at Florida Gulf Coast University, California, USA in 2008. The works showing here has been published in the I Am in It catalogue, revealing his experiment and exploration of the deconstruction of form and the space of Chinese characters.   

Shao's artworks have been collected by the Henry Luce Foundation, USA; Sydney University, Australia; Today Art Museum, Beijing.  

Wang Dalin (1949-2022 Shanghai), contemporary artist, is recognised for his horse paintings, abstract figure drawings, and square apple sculptures. In 1982 he began studying art under the painter Kong Baiji at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, majoring in Western painting, before graduating in 1984. He was head of the exhibition department at the Shenzhen Art Museum in 1995. From 1999 to 2001 he pursued further studies at the Central Academy of Arts in Beijing and graduated with an MA. He then returned to the Shenzhen Art Museum, was promoted to art curator in 2005, before designing the interior of the museum. Afterwards, he returned to live in Shanghai and continued to write and produce artworks. He passed away in November 2022.   

Alisan Fine Arts began representing Wang Dalin in 1987 when the gallery featured his works in the landmark exhibition A State of Transition: Contemporary Painting From Shanghai held at Hong Kong Arts Centre. Since then the gallery has organised four solo exhibitions for the artist, and included his work in several group exhibitions. Notably, his sculptures were shown as part of Oriental Plaza: Selected Contemporary Sculpture from China held in Beijing in 2000, curated by Alice King. This exhibition features his recent drawings of abstract figures, Flowers, and horses.   

Wang’s works have been collected by U.S. Congress, Washington DC; Grand Hyatt Beijing; and private collections in USA, UK, France, Brazil, Portugal, Japan and Hong Kong.
