Alon Zakaim Fine Art is proud to showcase a series of works by renowned British Pop Artist and Surrealist Patrick Hughes at this year's British Art Fair. The exhibition will include iconic works such as Hughes' illusionary scenes of Venetian canals and new pieces including Gorilla Guerrilla (2019).
These works will provide a glimpse into Hughes' immense oeuvre, defined by a lifelong exploration of perspective and illusion. Foregoing traditional canvas for board constructions, his three-dimensional paintings heighten the viewer's perception of depth by creating the illusion of perspective. What appear to be the furthest points of the painting instead protrude from the wall. The result is what the artist terms 'reverspective,' an optical illusion which has confounded and delighted viewers for more than fifty years. Hughes' colourful surrealist scenes will transport viewers from the imagined gallery interiors of Poppish (2019) and S.F.M.O.M.A. (2019) to the mountain peaks of Himalayan Hues (2007) and beyond.
Patrick Hughes lives and works in London. His works are held in several public collections including the British Library, the Tate Gallery and The British Academy, London; the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow; The Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, Frankfurt and the Denver Art Museum.
Hughes' works will be on display with Alon Zakaim Fine Art, Stand 12, at the British Art Fair at the Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York's HQ, Kings Road, London SW3 4RY from 3-6 October 2019.
