“Marcos Anziani: Before I Go” Premieres December 5th at Miami’s Avant Gallery
MIAMI, FL – Avant Gallery is proud to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Marcos Anziani. Opening December 5th at the Brickell City Centre location, Anziani’s exhibition “Before I Go” is a poetic recounting of the artist’s memories. His work, which is heavily influenced by his Dominican heritage and upbringing in the Bronx, seamlessly blends vibrant colors and emotive brushwork to create pieces that resonate with nostalgia. Anziani’s richly layered abstract paintings, which recall the energetic forms and complex perspective found in the work of Pablo Picasso, invite viewers to explore the intersection of culture and emotion.
The titles of Anziani’s paintings often act as guides to these memories, transforming our understanding of what is discernible in the abstracted depths. For example, forms are suggested in Before I Go (Antes de Irme); viewers can make out what appears to be a figure seated atop a moped. This seemingly ordinary scene takes on a new life when considering the story behind it—Anziani’s aunt is depicted bringing homemade food to her brother in prison in the Dominican Republic, where she serendipitously meets her future husband, an officer. Like Picasso, Anziani here paints the moped from multiple angles at the same time, showing the profile and back of the vehicle simultaneously to create a dynamic visual effect that also speaks to the complexity of memory. In the painting Right on Time (Justo a Tiempo), the tangle of colorful lines reveals another recollection from the artist’s childhood—a young Anziani throwing a rock that happened to hit and break the watch of a passing motorcyclist. Some pieces like Paper Airplane (Avion de Papel) bear a more universal theme, representing the act of letting go.
“Before I Go” will provide an inside look at Anziani’s latest paintings as he gears up for the largest presentation of his work to date, set to debut during Miami Art Week in December, including his participation in the Art Miami fair alongside Avant Gallery. Anziani’s exciting season in South Florida will continue to gain momentum in 2024 when he returns to the Norton Museum to participate in his second group show.
ABOUT MARCOS ANZIANI
Marcos Anziani (b. 1984) is an artist born in the Dominican Republic, raised in the Bronx, and now living and working in Connecticut. His paintings combine lyrical abstraction with expressionism in large, gestural strokes of color. The dazzling energy of the color is, as the artist says, curbed through context and line. Protean images of people and objects emerge from this technique, producing energetic paintings that dance over the canvas. The mostly warm colors help balance and subdue the often chaotic forms. Taking influence from luminaries such as Willem de Kooning, Joan Miró and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Anziani moves forward with visual motifs borrowed from street and naive art while working in continuity with the tradition of Abstract Expressionism.Anziani’s work has appeared in multiple solo and group exhibitions around the world. He has shown in galleries in Moscow, New York City, and Miami. In 2022, he signed on for exclusive representation through Avant Gallery. In early 2023, Anziani participated in his first group museum exhibition at the Norton Museum of Art, and successfully sold in his first major auction via Sotheby’s.
