Avant Gallery is proud to present Bodies, an exhibition focused on works centered on the human form by two critically acclaimed artists, Guy Le Baube and Nathan Sawaya. Bodies will showcase two artists using two different mediums while referencing the body as the primary subject. The opening preview will be held on December 4th, 2013 and will be displayed until December 28, 2013.
The erotic poses created by Guy Le Baube, specifically Airborne (2013), emphasizes the woman’s form in a playful nature while directly confronting the viewer’s gaze. Le Baube re-directs the viewer’s gaze from the female body’s visceral and seductive nature to her identity as a ‘femme fatale’. The artist’s earlier works of photographs using strictly black and white is a departure from these vivid compositions of the female subject in this recent body of works.
The three-dimensional human figures constructed by Nathan Sawaya use the famous LEGO® toy building blocks. The collection evokes a sense of whimsy, returning the viewer to a nostalgic past. These life-like sculptures portray liveliness but yet the materiality is a reminder to the viewer of the work’s immortality. Sawaya produces a multitude of expressions in order to communicate universal emotions that we can all relate to at some point.
In addition to Bodies, there will be a concurrent group show featuring Alec Monopoly, DAIN, Alejandro Vigilante, Santlov and Benjamin Rollins Caldwell, who’s work will also be featured in Design Miami.
Opening reception will take place on December 4th, 2013 8pm to 11pm at 309 23rd Street in Miami Beach. Guests must rsvp to [email protected]
Guy Le Baube was born in France in 1944. An award winning photographer and commercial director, Le Baube moved to New York in 1976. Highly esteemed for his editorial work in world-renowned fashion magazines and advertising campaigns, Le Baube’s photography has been seen in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle, Marie-Claire. In the early 90’s Le Baube transcended the commercial realm with a collection of photographs that won critical acclaim. Nathan Sawaya is a New York-based artist who creates awe-inspiring works out of some of the most unique concepts. His recent global museum tours feature large-scale sculptures using only LEGO® toy building blocks. With more than 1.5 million colored bricks in his New York studio, Sawaya’s sculptures take many forms. A 7-foot-long replica of the Brooklyn Bridge, a life-size tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, and Stephen Colbert are all now immortalized in plastic.
